Robots can be many things, but they are always known for their precision, caution, and artificial intelligence. With that said, The RepAIR Project: Reconstruction the Past: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics has been formed and is now helping in piecing together 79AD old fragments and frescos from the Roman city of Pompeii.

With the disastrous eruption of Vesuvius, followed by the World War II bombings, many historic artifacts, artwork, and history were damaged in the Ancient City of Rome. With the help of robots, these can be restored meticulously and accurately thanks to the top-of-the-line scanning and sensor features built in their robotic arms. These features can not only avoid damage to these pieces but also help in creating a 3D digital model to serve as a “reference” image.

The RePAIR Project will start by piecing together ceiling frescoes from the House of the Painters at Work in the Insula of the Lovers Chaste, which a team of experts in mural painting has been working on by hand since 2018. By having the robots onboard, this significant archaeological puzzle could be solved at a faster rate.

As much as robots are making history with their technological advancements and innovation, they are now also helping restore our history itself. Truly, robots have proven time and again that they are useful AI tools in assisting humans in more ways than one.
