Robots May Be Switzerland’s Newest Security Guards

Share

Robotics start-up company, ETH Zurich, has launched its Ascento robots and they may become Switzerland’s newest security guards. Although, some citizens are still privy and wary of these robots becoming their next patrollers.

Noting how employing security guards is a necessity for added safety and order in an area, there are a few challenges that come with it. In Switzerland specifically, putting more human security guards is getting quite expensive but there is still the need to place more. To help solve this, Ascento comes into the picture.

In a video released by ETH Zurich, Ascento robots are seen to be agile and capable to patrol many locations. As of writing, these robots seem to be successful in guarding Swiss security firm, Securitas AG. However, citizens cannot hide their concerns if these robots can provide the same level of attention and security that human security guards can give.

Albeit, this is a sound concern as accepting robots into our society, especially in the security sector will need some getting used to. This explains why even the donated robot dogs for the LAPD are still up for discussion.

Regardless, these robots are designed to help humans by becoming an extra layer of security as well as an extra set of hands for human security guards.

American-born New Yorker Linda Johnson has been fascinated with robotic machines since she was a teenager, when her father, a surgeon, would introduce to her the machines that he used to perform keyhole surgeries. This interest led her to pursue a tech degree at the University of Washington, where she met Sota Takahashi. They married and now have two children. Linda’s father developed dementia later on and was given a robot pet as a companion. She saw how much having a robot pet friend helped her father, which is what led her to create this website and advocate to spread word about robot pets and how they can help both children and the elderly.
